I was saddened to hear today about the passing of Margaret Price. She had one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. She was by far the finest Mozart soprano the UK has ever produced and indeed, I would go so far to say that Miss Price is one of the finest singers from this island ever. I am saddened that I never had the opportunity to hear her sing live. We do however have her recordings amongst which I treasure her Amelia, her Desdemona, her Donna Anna and her Countess. There is also a remarkable DVD of her singing a superlative Verdi Requiem with Jessye Norman where the joy of watching two singers at the peak of their powers is matched by their obvious satisfaction in working with each other. I particularly like this clip of her singing ‘io son l’umile ancella’. Perfection.
