This marks the end of my visit to Buenos Aires, my fourth. This isn’t a city that welcomes you with open arms like São Paulo does. It’s lived through too much trauma for that. Instead, it stays classy and elegant, with a polite friendliness that reveals a warmth underneath if you get to know it. This is a cultured city, with more bookstores per capita than anywhere else on earth. And then, there’s the Teatro Colón, a house where every visit feels like a privilege. Where Buenos Aires really excels is in the food and the wine. Its immense Italian and Jewish heritage is present in its culinary abundance and generous hospitality. This was the best way to end this trip to South America musically. Goerner played the Schumann with sheer poetry & delighted with Brahms & Rachmaninov encores. Then the orchestra played the Wagner items with fabulous lyricism making those melodies take wing gloriously. The Schumann piano concerto and overtures by Wagner #opera #operatravelling #concert #legendary #buenosaires Today I come to the end of another visit to São Paulo. Even now, after five visits, I still feel there’s so much more to discover. As I said last year, I can’t think of any other city I the world where I feel so instantly embraced. Whether thanks to the world’s biggest LGBTQ+ parade, or the fact that the antisemitism that’s impossible to escape in Europe seems so absent here. I feel that I’ve done so much and still have more to do. And the food. You could live for decades here and still not try everything. This is a city with such a vivid cultural life. With the greatest symphonic hall in the world and a beautiful theatre with an enterprising program. But what stays with me most of all is how, even though I speak with my Portuguese acquired on the banks of the Tagus, and how given my heritage means that I so often feel geographically torn, that the Paulistanos always seem to manage to make me feel at home in this phenomenal city.
